A New Approach to Witness Care

The Ministry of Justice has taken new steps to encourage witnesses to participate in court cases through the publication of manuals for witness care and child protection.

The manuals, which were officially launched recently, were produced in collaboration with the Canadian High Commission, after a yearlong effort to reform Jamaica’s witness management process and improve participation of vulnerable groups in the justice system.

This is the latest in a series of initiatives geared at improving witness care and protection including installing video-link technology in select courts to accommodate witnesses who cannot attend court physically; training of Jamaica Constabulary Force personnel and the establishment of a Witness Care Unit by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

These initiatives form part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of Justice aimed at minimising intimidation and fear of witnesses and other vulnerable groups.
