Most Valuable Debater Embarks On A Trip Of A Lifetime To The UN General Assembly

KINGSTON, September 25 (TIU)

Payton Patterson, winner of the Most Valuable Debater for the Public Sector Debate Competition 2024, is now in New York as a member of Jamaica’s delegation to the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) being held September 20-30. The delegation is being led by Prime Minister, Hon. Andrew Holness.

Mr Patterson was adjudged ‘Best Speaker’ three times throughout the Competition and is very deserving of the award. “I’m elated to have won the prize. I put in a lot of hard work, and prayed that I would be the Competition’s MVP, so I am extremely grateful and proud that I was able to accomplish that goal,” he says beaming with pride.

Mr Patterson noted that this was his first time travelling outside of Jamaica and so this makes the prize very special. “I consider myself a patriot and to be leaving the country for the first time as part of a group representing Jamaica on the global stage is a memory that I will definitely cherish,” he adds.

While at the UNGA, Mr Patterson will be able to witness notable and established speakers present on subject areas similar to what would have been a part of the discourse throughout the Debate Competition.

Mr Patterson was a member of the Ministry of Justice’s team that won the Debate Competition. He works as Acting Crown Counsel in the Legal Services Unit.
