Class Is in Session: Level Up with RUN
Year after year, September brings with it a familiar shift. As classrooms reopen and families get lost in the frenzy of purchasing books and uniforms, as well as relearning school routines, education takes a focal point in most households. This focal point, however, should not stop at just the children.
For public sector professionals, this season is a useful reminder to think about personal development. As workplaces evolve, technology advances, and the expectations of citizens change, maintaining the skills we already have is no longer enough. We also have to consider what we need to learn next.
Professional development is becoming increasingly self-directed, with more employees using online learning to stay current, acquire new skills, and prepare for future opportunities. Through the Reskilling, Upskilling and New-skilling (RUN) Project, the Government of Jamaica is helping to make this development more accessible by providing public sector employees with free, flexible access to thousands of online courses.
So, how can you make RUN work for you?
1. Stay current in your field
Keep pace with changes in your profession, from new technologies and industry standards to evolving approaches to service delivery. Use RUN to find courses that strengthen your current role and help you work more effectively.
2. Acquire a skill that gives you options
Develop transferable skills such as data analysis, project management, digital communication, or technology. Learning something new can broaden your opportunities and prepare you for future roles.
3. Don’t overlook your soft skills
Communication, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management all influence how effectively you work. Use RUN to strengthen the interpersonal skills that support your professional success.
4. Invest in the person behind the professional
Professional growth also includes personal wellbeing. One pathway available under the RUN Project is Public Sector Upliftment through Lifestyle, Selfcare & Empowerment (PULSE). RUN offers science-based learning opportunities to help you build the knowledge and habits that support your performance at work and in your life.
Your Turn to Learn
Professional growth does not have to mean pursuing another degree or making a major career change. It can start with one course, one new skill, or one decision to keep learning.
This Back-to-School season, identify the skills that can strengthen your performance or equip you for a new opportunity, and use RUN to start building them.
Your growth. Your time. Your investment.
